Home

You may not realize it, but you share your home with thousands of roommates. They’re tiny, but they’re everywhere. From the bathtub to the kitchen to the very air you breathe, massive amounts of microscopic life takes up residence alongside you.

Dusty Dwellers

Dust tells stories. They may look pretty dull, those bits floating through the air, but each mote teems with microscopic life. The lives of these microorganisms are a reflection of our own, with the occupants of dust particles varying according to the occupants of our homes.

Shower Habitats

Forecast for the day: a brief downpour followed by long periods of dryness–the shower environment is a habitat of extremes. At times, it’s an oasis for the moisture-loving microbes, and at other times, it's a desert fit for only the most resilient of microbes.

Kitchen Magic

Your kitchen harbors more microbes than you might realize, more even than that occasional mold you see growing on old fruit. We can credit microbes for making many foods possible. Through fermentation, microbes transform starches and sugars into alcohols and acids–flour becomes bread, cacao becomes chocolate, milk becomes yogurt. Many foods in your kitchen are examples of this transformative magic.
